Italy is one of the best countries in the world to spend their lives as a pensioner, and this for various and increasingly different reasons.

First of all because of the very relaxed lifestyle to which older people are subjected by choice, and then for the living conditions dictated by the climate always very mild characterized by winters not too cold and summers not too hot. The quality of life is extremely high for an American retirees, who has more money than Italy. Italy, despite being very small, still offers a variety of food and culture incredible.

Retirees are considered the "golden age", the perfect time to get away from your city and explore the others.

In 2022/2023 trends have certainly changed after the damage caused by the pandemic in this sector too.

Brexit has also contributed to altering the economic balance of nations, but fortunately the flow into Italy and the growing interest in the nation have not decreased and indeed have increased. This happened because Italy has preserved its characteristics and its peculiarities, proving itself as the perfect place for peaceful retreats.

When you think of the Italy of pensioners you certainly do not think of the big cities or the big metropolises, very chaotic and not at all different from those most frenetic European and American cities. In fact, the general trend for tourists is to settle in places of the classic Neapolitan tradition. These are small towns where you almost never speak English and where the streets are not wide.

They are mainly places where the famous "diffuse hotels" (alberghi diffusi) are located, that is houses built after earthquakes that have remained empty and have been refurbished to be used in tourism.

In these hotels (very different from luxury hotels) you live an authentic life and a real Italian experience. There is no shortage of people who decide to rent a classic apartment.

We have been in a small town in the province of Benevento. Guardia Sanframondi is a town of 5000 inhabitants surrounded by greenery and characterized by the tradition of one of the most important regions of the South, Campania. Here in Guardia Sanframondi we had the chance to meet personally Anne and Steve, two retired Americans who lived in Chicago. They managed to move here and found Italy a lovely place to live.

In particular, their eating habits have changed: in the interview they suggest eating better, especially thanks to fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition, their general habits have also changed as they no longer use the car but prefer to move on foot.

In Guardia Sanframondi they spend on average €250 per week for all expenses (from the groceries to the electric bill) and Steve tells us that he still keeps his business even at a distance but does it only for hobby and not to be able to live properly in Italy.

Both are really happy to be here, along with 10 other Americans who have come to this small town and who immediately fell in love with its incredible atmosphere.

Steve and Anne also tell us about how soon Steve’s brother and his wife would have moved, just to emphasize the need for well-being that is met by moving to Italy.
